The Art of Poetry
Do you like spending time with knights, jewels, tombs, and unicorns? Do you like to look at a painting and imagine a story behind it? Well then, this adventure is for you! Come look and wonder, think and sketch, imagine and create poems and stories based on art. This new writing workshop will explore our neighborhood treasures: Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters, to write ekphrastic poetry. Ekphrastic means “description” in Greek. Ekphrastic poetry is a vivid description of a scene or work of art-usually painting, photographs, or statues. Each week we will travel through the park to the Cloisters, noting our surroundings, sketching in our journals, looking at art, and writing poems and stories based on what we experience. This workshop will culminate in publication in a print anthology. Pickup and dropoff will take place at PS/IS 187 at 349 Cabrini Boulevard NYC 10033, not the Cornerstone Center. If you would prefer to meet the group at the Cloisters, please email Jane LeCroy at Jane@janelecroy.com. This workshop is a new offering for Uptown Stories, and will only meet for five sessions. We hope to run a full ten-week version in the winter semester.
