POW! Writing and Drawing Comics (July 8-July 12)
In this workshop, students will learn how to use cartooning vocabulary to tell their own stories, from ordinary, everyday events to the most fantastic realms of a child’s imagination. Little art experience is needed, just an interest and a passion for making work. Students will be taught every stage of comics illustration development, including pin-ups, single-frame and multi-frame pages, using art materials such as pencil, pen, ink wash and watercolor and collage materials. At the end of the semester, all the students will participate in a gallery show at the WordUp Bookstore, and have their best work printed in a class anthology, giving everyone a chance to have their work spotlighted and celebrated. This workshop is made possible through a partnership with Ava's Smile, in honor of Ava Hecht's legacy of creativity and compassion.
